To commence this overview of veterans, a brief definition to clarify who a veteran is and why they are deserving of support follows. After which information concerning why this population is in need of services and finally what services should be provided. The American War Library states that a veteran is defined by federal law, moral code and military service as Any person who served for Any length of time in Any military service branch (Coleman, 2008). No matter how a veteran initially entered the service, be it through the draft process or voluntarily, all veterans have served and have made sacrifices to protect and serve the United States of America. Prior to that individual ever becoming a member of the military they were all someone’s newborn infant, a son or a daughter, a child with hopes and dreams, and a young adult with a future life full of possibilities. As a veteran, many do go on to realize their hopes and dreams and to live full and productive lives, it is the fact that a veteran may also face challenges and disabilities, directly linked to their military service, that thwarts their ability to live the lives once possible, that needs to be addressed. No veteran should be left behind or forgotten and all vetera ns should be empowered, be their wounds visible or invisible, all should be restored to their fullest capacity, for we as a nation owe the veteran for their service and sacrifices. Scott Joplin lived in Sedalia, Missouri for a few years. It is known that no one is quite sure on when he was born but that he was born in Texas. People believe he was born between June 1867 and January 1868. When he was very young he moved to Texarkana, which is the border of Texas and Arkansas. He gained access to a piano and begun to teach his self. Julius Weiss noticed Joplin’s talent and started teaching him more piano, free of charge. Joplin went to Lincoln High School at Sedalia in the 1880’s. He moved to St. Louis in 1880’s. The first time he was known for his music was 1891. In 1893, while Joplin was in Chicago, he started a band and played cornet. After the fair was over he went back to the only place he considered home, Sedalia. Joplin played in the Queen City Cornet Band for about a year. He went as far as New York in 1895. He worked as a pianist when he’s not traveling. He taught many musicians, like Scott Hayden, and Arthur Marshall. Joplin went to George R. Smith College probably in the 1896. No body knows what he went there for since the college and records were burned in a fire in 1921. Even though Joplin went to college, he still did not have mastery of music notation. It did not stop him from being a composer. He tried to publish two rags but only ended up selling originals in 1896. He had to share credit with Charles Daniel. My boss never suspected who did it.† On and on the litany went. About ten minutes later, I interrupted, unable to listen to any more. â€Å"Look, Evan, this is really amazing stuff you’ve been doing. I mean, this is stuff my people in Seattle would never, ever dream of doing in a million years.† â€Å"Really?† he asked happily. â€Å"Really,† I said flatly. â€Å"But, although it makes a big statement, wouldn’t it be more in line with the, uh, Angel’s purposes to work on securing souls for him?† â€Å"Her,† corrected Evan. â€Å"Her. Right.† Lucifer, Satan, the Devil, whatever. There were lots of names for what humans regarded as the supreme entity of evil, and I’d heard tons over the years. Considering the popular idea of Lucifer being a fallen angel, this â€Å"Angel of Darkness† thing didn’t surprise me, but the female part did. â€Å"Sorry,† I told him. â€Å"We know the Angel as male.† â€Å"It’s okay,† he replied. â€Å"The Angel is all things to all people.† â€Å"Right. So, anyway, I mean, the ultimate goal is to convert as many people to her as possible, right? To lead them down the left-hand path. It doesn’t seem like melting ice cream would do that-not that that isn’t cool,† I added hastily. â€Å"I’m just wondering if you should be more focused on leading people into temptation instead.† Evan didn’t seem bothered by my criticism in the least. â€Å"Maybe that’s what your group is directed to do. But this is what ours is supposed to do. We all serve different purposes in the greater plan.† I was sure I had an idiotic look on my face, so I tried to shift back to the alluring, seductive mode that had landed me this job in the first place. His breath caught as the full effect of my glow enchanted him. He swallowed nervously. â€Å"Perhaps. But not now. The Ancient Toltec Trade and Economy The Toltec Civilization dominated central Mexico from about 900 - 1150 A.D. from their home city of Tollan (Tula). The Toltecs were mighty warriors who spread the cult of their greatest god, Quetzalcoatl, to the far corners of Mesoamerica. Evidence at Tula suggests that the Toltecs had a trade network and received goods from as far away as the Pacific coast and Central America, either through trade or tribute. The Toltecs and the Postclassic Period The Toltecs were not the first Mesoamerican civilization to have a trade network. The Maya were dedicated merchants whose trade routes reached far from their Yucatan homeland, and even the ancient Olmec - the mother culture of all of Mesoamerica - traded with their neighbors. The mighty Teotihuacan culture, which was pre-eminent in central Mexico from about 200-750 A.D., had an extensive trade network. By the time the Toltec culture reached prominence, military conquest and subjugation of vassal states were on the rise at the expense of trade, but even wars and conquest stimulated cultural exchanges. Tula as a Center of Trade It is difficult to make observations about the ancient Toltec city of Tollan (Tula) because the city was extensively looted, first by the Mexica (Aztecs) before the arrival of the Europeans, and then by the Spanish. Proof of extensive trade networks may have therefore been carried off long ago. For example, although ​jade was one of the most important trade materials in ancient Mesoamerica, only one jade piece has been found at Tula. Nevertheless, archaeologist Richard Diehl has identified pottery from Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Campeche and Guatemala at Tula, and found potsherds traced to the Veracruz region. Shells from the Atlantic and Pacific have also been excavated at Tula. Surprisingly, the Fine Orange pottery associated with the contemporary Totonac culture has not been found at Tula. Quetzalcoatl, God of Merchants As the major deity of the Toltecs, Quetzalcoatl wore many hats. In his aspect of Quetzalcoatl - Ehà ©catl, he was the god of wind, and as Quetzalcoatl - Tlahuizcalpantecuhtli he was the bellicose God of the Morning Star. The Aztecs venerated Quetzalcoatl as (among other things) the god of merchants: the post-conquest Ramirez Codex mentions a feast dedicated to the god by traders. The principal Aztec god of trade, Yacatechutli, has been traced to earlier roots as a manifestation of either Tezcatlipoca or Quetzalcoatl, both of whom were worshiped at Tula. Given the Toltecs fanatical devotion to Quetzalcoatl and that gods later association with the merchant class by the Aztecs (who themselves regarded the Toltecs as the apogee of civilization), it is not unreasonable to surmise that trade played an important role in Toltec society. Trade and Tribute The historical record seems to suggest that Tula did not produce much in the way of trade goods. A great deal of utilitarian Mazapan-style pottery has been found there, suggesting that Tula was, or was not far from, a place that produced it. They also produced stoneware bowls, cotton textiles, and items fashioned from obsidian, such as blades. Bernardino de Sahagà ºn, a colonial era chronicler, claimed that the people of Tollan were skilled metalworkers, but no metal not of later Aztec origin has been found at Tula. It is possible that the Toltecs dealt in more perishable items like food, cloth or woven reeds which would have deteriorated with time. The Toltec did have significant agriculture and possibly exported part of their crops. In addition, they had access to a rare green obsidian found near present-day Pachuca. There is the possibility that the warlike Toltecs produced relatively little themselves, instead relying on conquered vassal states to send them goods as tribute. Tula and the Gulf Coast Traders Toltec scholar Nigel Davies believed that during the Postclassic era trade was dominated by the different cultures of Mexicos Gulf Coast, where mighty civilizations had risen and fallen since the days of the ancient Olmec. During Teotihuacns age of dominance, shortly before the rise of the Toltecs, the gulf coast cultures had been an important force in Mesoamerican commerce, and Davies believes that the combination of Tulas location in the center of Mexico, their low production of trade goods, and their reliance on tribute over commerce placed the Toltecs at the fringes of Mesoamerican trade at the time (Davies, 284).
