Racism in the Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Essay Malcolm X, Martin Luther King, and other black anti-racist leaders fought against discrimination. They fought a battle that has gone on longer than many people have been around, back in the 1800s. In the book The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn written by Mark Twain, twain wants us to see how this battle rages on today, affecting many peoples everyday lives. The book itself is very racist toward African Americans in which the word nigger is used. Many people use this word today, but back when Huck was around using vulgar discriminating words was a regular thing. So the question is how is racism still shown today in the 20th century and the relationship in how Twain describes it in his book? First racial thing in the book is when Toms talking to Huck about breaking Jim out of jail. Tom says, Give a nigger a inch and he ell (88). When he says this he is saying that if you give a black person freedom, its giving them way too much. But Huck isnt fond of using such a poignant word to Jim. Racism plays a big part when the King and the Duke show up on the raft with them. When they stay with the girls in the house, the sophomoric type of Duke says I should ‘a reckoned the differences in the rank would sejested that a corn-shuck bed wont fit for me to sleep on . Your Gracell take the shuck bed yourself (126). This shows his destitute for taking Jim seriously as a person and not just some dumb slave. The use of racist and vulgar words was constantly heard from the white adults as well as the children in the novel. …was Jim a runaway nigger?(126). Out of all the pieces of literature this book is known by many people worldwide, not only does things in this book still happen today, we can all relate this book. The lack of care the whites had for blacks, thus, the whites have lost nearly all of their respect. This was Mark Twains indirect way of showing the whites inequality to the blacks. In todays age, the ideas of racism have definitely changed. Slavery is no more, and even the use of such language as nigger, is considered vulgar. But, as children such as Huck and Tom grew up considering slavery the normal, children today grow up learning the exact opposite.

Profile of Secondary Education in Kohat Education is basic in the life of man, which is able to sharpen his faculties of mind, and helps to grow harmoniously. This also helps to grow harmoniously in every sphere of life-Physical, intellectual social and emotional. Education plays vital role in the progress of a country. Education is a life long investment in human resources development. The quality and quantity of educated manpower determine the strength of a nation. All developed and educated countries have recognized the needs of intimate relation of education of life and needs of the community (Singhal, 1991). All the developed countries have the strong education structure system in their countries. The present structure of education in Pakistan is 5+3+2+2, primary stage, middle stage and then secondary and higher stage and at last higher education. The research study on the basis of secondary education so that it is emphasized on secondary level (IX-X). Secondary education is an important sub sector of the entire educational system. On the one hand, it provides the middle level workforce for the economy and other; it acts as a factor for the higher levels of education. Higher education, which expected to produce quality professionals in different fields, hinges on the quality of secondary education (Shah, 2007).Secondary education is a stage, where a student enters, adolescence. This is the most crucial stage of life. The basic perceptions and models of behavior start taking shape and problems of adjustment with the new role in life assume critical significance (Hussain, 2003). Secondary education holds pivotal position in education system of every country, for it is terminal stage for most of students and it also serves as a linkage stage between elementary stage and higher education. It provides input for higher education and thus quality of higher education is dependant upon secondary education (AIOU, 1997). In Pakistan it consists of four classes, 9th and 10th secondary education, and 11th and 12th higher secondary education. Secondary education (IX-XII) is an important sub-sector of the entire educational system. On the one hand, it provides the middle level work force for the economy and on the other it acts as a feeder for the higher levels of education. Higher education which is expected to produces quality professionals in different fields hinges on the quality of secondary education. This level of education, therefore, needs to be revamped in such a way that it prepares young men and women for the pursuit of higher education as well as prepares th em to adjust to their practical lives meaningfully and productively (Govt. of Pakistan, 1998). Khaliq (2000) proposed that Students have small problems, which can be solved with much less money and effort if identified earlier. If they are left unattended, they not only hinder the children in their classroom achievement but also become serious emotional problems later on. The most common problems at the secondary education levels are (a) Educational Problems (b) Financial Problems (c) Home Adjustment (d) Vocational Adjustment (e) Health Adjustment and (f) Personal and Social Problems. It is a fact that destiny of nation is shaped in the classrooms. This implies that education is the main source of progress and development. It can be said without hesitation that education is mostly responsible for the future of Pakistan. Through education, nation building process for the future citizens of the country is taken place. From this point of view, a lot of responsibilities lie with the educationist and the quality of education. Therefore, the education must be qualitative so that the students should develop necessary knowledge, skills, and attitude to perform their duties effectively. It is in this context that quality education becomes the most important ingredient to enhance the quality of life in any country. It is so worthwhile to raise some issues in this regard and think of their solution. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM The present study was therefore conducted to problem and prospects of secondary education at district Kohat. OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY The main objectives of the study were: To determine the present profile of secondary education in Kohat. To determine the needs of teachers for the secondary education. To determine the needs of students for the secondary education. SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY This study will help us to know about the major problems faced by secondary teachers. The most common problems at the secondary education levels are (a) Educational Problems (b) Financial Problems (c) Home Adjustment (d) Vocational Adjustment (e) Health Adjustment and (f) Personal and Social Problems. METHODS AND PROCEDURE POPULATION All the secondary schools in public sector of district Kohat, their heads, secondary school teachers and students of 10th class constituted the population of the study. SAMPLE Random sampling technique was used and description of sample was as followed. Sample of Schools Total twenty-four secondary schools in public sector were randomly selected. The proportion of boys and girls schools was fifty- fifty. Sample of Heads All the heads of already sampled twenty-four secondary schools of public (the proportion of public sector schools of boys and girls schools was equal) included in sample. Sample of Teachers Forty-eight teachers teaching secondary classes were randomly selected in which proportion of male female teachers was fifty fifty. In such a way that from each sample district, the proportion of the public male and female teachers was equal. Sample of Students One hundred and twenty students were randomly selected in which proportion of male female students was fifty fifty. In such a way that from each sample district the proportion of the public and private and male and female students were equal. RESEARCH INSTRUMENTS The researcher prepared three questionnaires using five-point scale. Questionnaires were used as a research instruments.. Questionnaire for Heads of Secondary Schools. Questionnaire for Teachers of Secondary Schools. Questionnaire for Students of Secondary Schools. DATA COLLECTION The investigator started data collection process w.e.f 5th January, 2008 by visiting each sampled school and administering the questionnaire in person. It took about three months to collect data from the selected sample. The response rate was 100 percent. DATA ANALYSIS Data collected through above-mentioned instruments were tabulated, analyzed and interpreted category-wise as principals, teachers and students. To analyze the data, chi square and percentage were used. For statistical treatment chi-square was applied using the following formula: = (Garrett, 1997) On the basis of the analysis and interpretation of data, conclusions were drawn and recommendations were made. RESULTS This chapter deals with the analysis and interpretation of data. The data collected through research instruments were tabulated, analyzed, and interpreted in the light of the objectives of the study by using chi-square. The above tables indicate the demographic position of public managed schools. The academic and professional qualifications of both heads and teachers of public sector schools are better. The average enrollment per sampled school of public sector was 158. Average teacher student ratio in public schools was 1:70.. Table 2 indicates that the à ¯Ã‚ Ã‚ £2 values for all six administrative aspects of public schools head are greater than the critical value at 0.05 levels. Involvement of staff in decision making differed significantly in favour of public schools heads in the category of strongly agree. Head likes to be a part of team with leading teachers does not differed significantly in favour of public schools heads in the category of strongly agree. The aspect of well organization of tasks was found differed significantly in favour of public heads in the category of strongly disagree. The fair selection procedure for recruitment of teachers differed significantly in favour of public schools. The coordination among the administrative staff differed significantly in does not favour of public schools heads in the category of strongly agree. Whereas, the teachers having command over subject matter differed significantly in favour of public schools heads in the category of strongly agree. Job security for teachers is ensured Lesson planning is done by teachers regularly. Attention is given to the character building of students. Teachers are well prepared before taking the class. The students compete well with the students. School environment is suitable for teaching. Table 3 exhibits that the obtained à ¯Ã‚ Ã‚ £2 value is greater than the critical value at 0.05 levels as the frequency of responses of public and schools heads about four aspects. Ensuring job security for teachers differed significantly in favour of public schools heads in the category of strongly agrees. Teachers having command over teaching methodology differed significantly in favour of public schools heads in the category of strongly agree. Giving attention to the character building of students differ significantly. School providing quality education differed significantly in favour of public schools heads in the category of strongly agrees. Students competing well with other students do not differ significantly. Keeping schools environment suitable for teaching differed significantly in favour of public schools heads in the category of strongly agree. CONCLUSION On the basis of interpretation and finding of data following conclusion were drawn The demographic data of study revealed that private sector schools had actually less number of students and teachers at secondary level as compared to public sector schools. The results of 10th class students in boards examinations of private schools were better than government schools. With respect to ownership of building almost 98% public sector schools had their own buildings while majority of private schools were running in rented buildings. In public schools, student teacher ratio was higher than private schools. The quality of education is the most burning issue of the day. Administration is considered to be the most important ingredient of any organization, for it serves as the asset for the most previous assets of the nations which are educational institutions. The entire study revealed that heads of private sector secondary schools were better than heads of public sector secondary schools regarding involvement of other staff in decision making, keeping themselves as a part of team while leading them and carrying out the tasks in a well- organized fashion. But the heads of public sector secondary schools were more qualified academically as well as professionally having more administrative experience as compared to private sector secondary schools heads. It is no more rhetoric but a time tested reality that destiny of the nations is shaped in classrooms. It means that teachers are the central figure in education system of any country. The present research found that teachers of public secondary schools were more qualified academically as well as professionally having command over teaching methodology as compared to the teachers of private secondary schools. Head teachers management aspects were found better in privately managed schools for the aspects of becoming a part of team well arranged tasks, and coordination among administrative staff. Whereas the aspects of involving staff in decision making, keeping selection procedure fair, and observing teachers command over subject matter were found dominant in public sector schools. The quality of education is intrinsically integrated and directly proportional to the quality of infrastructure. The physical facilities hold paramount position in educational institutions. It was found that position of physical facilities was better in public secondary schools than in private secondary schools with respect to buildings, libraries, play grounds, furniture while position of private sector secondary schools was better in availability of computer labs and gas facilities. The quality of education also owes a lot to the quality of supervision. It was found head teachers of private schools were better for having observing timing, and maintaining teacher student ratio. Whereas arranging sports and game, keeping fair assessment procedure and merit based admission were found dominant at public sector schools management. RECOMMENDATIONS On the basis of analysis of data, findings and conclusions the following recommendations are offered. The enrollment of students was higher in public sector than private sector. It is therefore recommended to establish more schools in the public sector. School mapping kept in mind before establishing new schools. The heads and teachers of schools should take such necessary actions which may help to raise academic standard of these schools. The heads of public schools should take serious consideration of the problem of their low pass percentage. Teachers of public schools may be made accountable for their poor result in examinations. They must also be rewarded with incentives for showing good results. Teachers of both systems should be given opportunities for regular in-service training in order to improve their teaching methodology. Libraries of public and private schools should be kept well maintained and all necessary books be available and students and teachers should be encouraged to get benefit from their library. All necessary educational facilities such as well maintained buil dings; science laboratories with standardized apparatus and needed audio visual aids be provided and maintained by school management. Teachers should be encouraged to make use of A.V. aids more and more to make teaching process more effective. The school curriculum should be updated according to the emerging needs of the society and it should be revised regularly. The study indicates that due consideration was not given to merit in student admission procedure. Merit should be the sole consideration for entry to private institutions. Access to higher education, is recommended to base on entry tests that measure the aptitude and ability of suitable candidates for higher learning. The services of National Testing Service be utilized for construction of valid and reliable tests at secondary level. Hell. The four lettered word that trembles in the throats of men and children alike; The images of suffering, flame pits and blood, the smell of burning flesh, the shrieking of those who have fallen from grace. For centuries man has sought out ways to cleanse his soul, to repent for his sins and possibly secure his passage into paradise, all evoked by the fear of eternal damnation and pain. The early 20th century philosopher and existentialist writer Jean-Paul Sartre saw life as an endless realm of suffering and a complete void of nothingness. His pessimistic ideals of life followed through to his beliefs on death, as death for him was a final nothingness. If death was a final nothingness, Sartre's view of hell was really a final statement on life. Jean-Paul Sartre's depiction of hell in the play No Exit reflects his belief on humanity and society.No Exit's hell is embodied in a single room, decorated in Second Empire style furnishings. The surroundings seem more comforting than the traditional conception of hell, as the ones illustrated in Dante's inferno or even the bible. However, from an existentialist's point of view, the setting in itself is rather hellish, as its lavishness is overwhelmingly superficial and superficiality is rejected in existentialist belief. As existentialists believe that human life is lived in suffering, sin, guilt and anxiety, anything superficial is a foolish and naive way of denying despair. Harmonium and Nettles Essay

Harmonium and Nettles both highlight the theme of memory. As they both are looking back over past memories that are painful, the poems feature the feelings of being helpless in stopping the hurt that was caused. The writer in Harmonium feels remorse for the things he hadn’t said to his father as Armitage states â€Å"then mouth in reply some shallow sorry phrase or word too starved of breath to make itself heard†. The writer in Nettles is protective of the recurring threat to his child that he can’t destroy. â€Å"rain had called up tall recruits behind the shed,† this quote shows the father cannot destroy them .They differ in the way they felt powerless however as in Nettles the father is feeling powerless because of a physical threat whereas in Harmonium it is an emotional threat of the inevibility of death and unspoken feelings that makes the writer feel powerless. Furthermore they both include the reality of family life as the poems are realistic and the poems, especially Nettles, have both the love and misery of family relationships. In Nettles the love in the poem is the protective instincts of a parent towards his son but the misery is the Nettles that had hurt his child and the fact that being protective isn’t enough to stop him from getting hurt. The realistic relationship in Harmonium is the family resentment and frustration from a son to his father. We can tell that the writer resents and is frustrated by his father as it says â€Å"and he being him can’t help but say†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦Ã¢â‚¬ ¦. and I, being me† which shows that he is frustrated at their relationship. However the Harmonium is used to describe his father so therefore his family life whereas in Nettles it is reversed. The Nettles, that had caused pain for the boy, is actually describing soldiers and war therefore the underlying message is not about family b ut about war and the underlying message in Harmonium is not about the Harmonium but about family.

The Righteous Deceit of Helen Turrell

Helen Turrell is portrayed at first glance as an independent caretaker of her nephew, Michael Turell in the short story, â€Å"The Gardener† by Rudyard Kipling. However, upon reading between the lines of this character's story, her facade of honesty is peeled away. In it's place is a of lies exposed by the story's namesake, the Gardener. Her experience with the public is through a veil of her lie. Instead of going to France to cure her lung trouble as the public thought, Helen was actually there bearing Michael into the world. Besides this secret, Helen's honesty is a well-known trait to the general public.To her son, however, her honesty and lies are a strain on their relationship. By ten years old he discovers that he is an illegitimate child. When Michael unexpectedly dies fighting in World War I, Helen meets Mrs. Scarsworth. They meet while traveling to visit Michael's grave, and Mrs. Scarsworth prompts the first introspection of Helen's lie. The Gardener at the graveyard confirms the illegitimate son to the reader. The story seems to be told from Helen's version of the happenings, and the public's gossip about it. Outwardly, the public's gossip defines Helen's appearance outside of her deceit.Rudyard Kipling builds on his theme of the effects of deceit buy developing the character Helen Turrell into an innocent, selfless, yet deceitful person through her twisted interactions with the public in general; her unfulfilled relationship with Michael Turrell; and her short, strained relationship with Mrs. Scarsworth. Helen's relationship with the public was a deceitful one, but both parties gained from the relationship. The beginning paragraphs of the story aren't quite from the authors omniscient narrative. The sentences are short and information is sparse and sometimes absent, as though it was gathered through gossip.From this it can be concluded that the public gossip is writing this part of the story. The opening paragraph explains that Helen Turrell i s sister to recently deceased George Turrell; when he died he left a scandal in his wake of an illegitimate baby in India. Helen was suffering health issues and recovering in France, but she returns back to her home in Hampshire with her nephew Michael. As far as her relationship with the public, â€Å"All these details were public property, for Helen was as open as the day,† and â€Å"scandals are only increased by hushing them up† (Kipling).Her honest reputation shows how well the Helen kept her secret from the public. The gossip on Helen seemed to sometimes focus on how much of an honest person she was, and this can be interpreted in two ways. Her honesty made the public respect her relationship with her nephew, even though she reveals that she lets him call her â€Å"mummy† at bedtime. No foul play was suspected. However, focusing on how honest someone is begs for attention to the fallacious human condition, and this is a subtle hint to the other side of Hel en's facade. This may have eaten away at her, causing some of the distress in her relationship with her son.Helen Turrell has a unique relationship with her son that significantly defines her character into one of innocence and goodwill despite her facade. When her son, Michael, is around 10 years old, he realizes that his â€Å"civil status [is] not quite regular,† and then he proceeds to â€Å"[break] down her stammered defences† (Kipling). The question of Michael's legitimacy will obviously be a sore point for Helen that she isn't interested in talking about much. She has been hiding it her entire life, and that is not a small feat, for it is her own son!This, combined with allowing Michael to call her â€Å"Mummy† at bedtime shows that she still considers him her son, with all the attachment and emotion that comes with it. After hiding it for so long, Helen doesn't have anything other than a tentative response to Michael's attacks. Her tentative response ref lects that Helen does not dwell on her deceit. She understands that deceit is morally incorrect, and she is embarrassed by its evil nature. Because Helen is somewhat foreign to her lie, her innocence is preserved through the amoral facade. Her lie is so her son can have a better life; it is selfless, and therefore Helen is arguably moral.This isn't to say that Helen regrets her predicament as Helen's meetings with the flustered Mrs. Scarsworth reveal. Helen's relationship with Mrs. Scarsworth shows that Helen almost doesn't realize the extent of her deception, and her deception is further shown as good compared to Mrs. Scarsworth's pathological lying. Helen meets Mrs. Scarsworth through her journey to visit the grave of the now deceased Michael. Mrs. Scarsworth is visiting the graveyards under the premise of seeing commissions for friends who would be comforted knowing someone made the trip. She ends up staying in the same hotel as Helen. In the middle of he night, Mrs. Scarsworth d isturbs Helen to confess that one of her commissions was her love. Helen â€Å"desperately† asks, â€Å"But why do you tell me? †(Kipling) Helen's desperation is an obvious response to being disturbed so late at night. It is obviously annoying to be awoken in order to tend to someone's moral dilemma, but Helen is paying more than flustered attention to the problem of Mrs. Scarsworth. Helen's lie is close to revealing herself at the question of why Mrs. Scarsworth would reveal to her. Helen fears that Mrs. Scarsworth feels an inherent kinship with Helen and the night time intruder might guess at Helen's deception.That is why Helen truly feels desperation towards Mrs. Scarsworth. Helen shouldn't be worried though, for Mrs. Scarsworth confesses of â€Å"always lying† for about â€Å"six years†(Kipling) of deception total. This pathological lying is a circumstance of evil that serves as an antithesis of Helen's situation. Mrs. Scarsworth is visibly and audibl y troubled by her lying, whereas Helen was only troubled by the necessary strain it put on her relationship with her son. Helen has lived with the deception for so long without worrying as much about it that it doesn't matter so much to become the crippling and defining trait that it is in Mrs.Scarsworth's life. Through Helen's emotions in her relationship with Mrs. Scarsworth, it is really revealed that Michael is her son and not her nephew. Here there is no mention of public gossip, but perhaps Helen can now embrace her innocence and confess now that Michael has passed away. Helen's character is developed as such through her relationships with the other characters in this short story. Her development is especially shown in her unique interactions with each different character because of her deception. But in the end, her deception is an act of selflessness and love, and cleans Helen's moral slate.As a character, Helen's selfless innocence is finally proved by the appearance of the gardener. The gardener's â€Å"endless compassion† â€Å"Unending love† in his eyes when his omniscience shows Helen where her â€Å"son†(Kipling) was redeems her. The Gardener's traits match Christian Christ himself, and in showing Helen where her son is, forgives her. The story ends here, but if it was told in reference to what public gossip knows, Helen must have confessed after her trip to the graveyard. Thus, Helen finally opens up and moves on with her life past her righteous deceit.
